The Veterinary field is fast moving, competitive, and definitely hard to get into. However, with motivation, dedication, and perseverance, you can achieve it. But first you need to make sure it is the right career for you.
One of the key moments in cementing my choice to achieve my Veterinary journey was during the Vet-Med-link Course at Nottingham Uni. This course was extremely helpful in giving me insight on how to succeed in the Veterinary field, and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in pursuing Veterinary Science.
A vital question you must ask yourself in order to find out if Vet Med is the right thing for you is: "If you couldn't be a vet, what else would you do?" Many people will begin to consider other career choices, as I did, wracking my brain for something else I wanted to do. When I came up empty-handed I was nervous and confused.
The model answer to this question, from a Veterinary Surgeon's point of view, is this:
Question EVERYTHING: ask yourself or another person, "Why couldn't I be a Vet?" They may reply with "You didn't get into Vet school". If that is enough to deter you from your path to Veterinary Medicine, then perhaps you want to reevaluate this career choice. If you don't get in: reapply. Use the year off to gather more experience making yourself the prime applicant and a model student who they cannot resist or reject.
There is no other job in this world I would rather do than be a Veterinary Surgeon.
If you share my love of this field, now consider why. Why do you want to be a Vet? What is your reason? It has to be more than the fact that you want to help animals, as admirable as that is, because as soon as you say that, you will be taken out of consideration by most vet schools. A personal story may play a part in your decision. If so, use it. For every one of you, there are 2 more people applying for your position in your dream Vet School, and your personal story is going to set you apart.
